TrainerRoad's software can sync with just about any smart trainer or your bike's power meters. Determined on a scale of 1 to 10, they are calculated using three methods: machine learning, the company's already comprehensive set of anonymized data gleaned from millions of workouts completed by others athletes, and your own recent training performance. These progress levels allow the app to track your increasing fitness in each training zone. These FTP tests are built into the training plan at the start of the experience, then you are retested every four to six weeks in order to recalibrate the program according to your 'progress levels'. This indication of the highest average power you can sustain for 45-60 minutes is measured in watts.

For those who don't have a competition goal in mind, who just want to develop their fitness, there is also the TrainNow option where TrainerRoad allows you to choose from a selection of daily workouts in three categories: Climbing, Attack and Stamina.ДЄdaptive training may be smart, but it's still not smart enough to eliminate the need for ramp testing to establish your baseline 'Functional Threshold Power' (FTP). Among other things, it asks you to choose the type of race (gravel, mountain, road), the date of the event and your preferred indoor and outdoor training days.

To get started, TrainerRoad creates a personalized training plan to help you prepare for a future race, ride, or event. Since it follows you over time, it's sold as a subscription service you pay $20 a month, or $189 if you buy an entire year at a time.

The more you use it, the more data it can use to fine-tune your workout, much like a Google Nest thermostat that over time fine-tunes the temperature in your home by studying your daily usage patterns. You have the option of accepting the adapted program or sticking to the original level of difficulty. Or on a day when the riding is tough, the program will allow you to relax and provide a slightly less intense follow-up workout.

If, for example, you overwrite a VO2 max workout, the program will adapt and spit out a harder workout option the next day. The program analyzes each workout by measuring how easily the rider completes each training zone. The platform achieves this through its machine learning tool called Adaptive Training, a system that creates goal-based training plans that are updated daily using artificial intelligence software that responds to the rider's unique strengths, weaknesses and scheduling constraints. But the platform is very effective in fulfilling its singular mission: to make you a faster cyclist. It lacks the candy-colored player bling of Zwift, the quirky humor and range of driving options that come with Systm, and the personal touch of a human trainer (which comes at a high monthly cost) on Training Peaks. TrainerRoad is a a bit of an outlier in the universe of cycling training apps.
